Beira Interior
With a winemaking history that goes back to the foundation of the Portuguese nationality, it is the most mountainous region in continental Portugal, comprising some of the highest mountain ranges. It is divided into three sub-regions, Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel, and Cova da Beira.
The wines are very influenced by the mountain and the altitude. The whites have great aromatic exuberance and a lot of freshness. The reds have complex aromas of wild fruits and spices, and a marked freshness.
Climate: Is seriously continental, hot and dry in summer, but with very cold, long winters.
Soil: Mostly granitic with small shale patches

Roman Traces
Vine growing in this region dates back to the Roman era. One can still find several rock tanks that were used to produce wine.
Protectionism
Due to the quality and the social and economic importance of the wines from Beiras, some measures were implemented to protect these wines, namely during the reign of D. João I and D. João.
