    • WinesFrom north to south of Portugal, ando also from Madeira to the Azores islands we can find great wines made with grape varieties full of history, produced with recent technologies but always respecting traditional methods. Portugal has a unique heritage based on the diversity and singularity of grape varieties and terroir, to which consistency and an excellent quality-price ratio is associated. This is the singular and unique heritage that is reflected in the wines we present, mostly from small Portuguese producers.

      • OrganicThe vineyards that produce organic wines are treated by the most friendly and natural methods. Vines can thus produce grapes that are natural and with more flavor. Winemakers use indigenous yeasts and control the evolution of wine with gentle and non-invasive methods. The aromas of wine are thus more faithful to the fruit and its terroir. Through the absence of chemicals, organic wines are better for our health.
      • NaturalIt is not easy to describe the profile of natural wines. And that is exactly why they are so exciting and challenging. There is a wide variety of flavours and aromas, depending on the terroir, the grapes and the winemaker. They are purer wines, from small vineyards, treated in a sustainable, organic or biodynamic way, made with indigenous yeasts. Fermentations occur spontaneously and some are cloudy because they are not filtered.
      • OrangeAlso called Amber Wines or Skin Maceration Wines are currently a very challenging trend, but they are very far from being a fashion. In fact, these “Orange Wines” are the result of an ancestral winemaking process that was forgotten during the 20th century but was revived at the beginning of this century, and just as well.
    • SparklingThe term sparkling applies only to wines whose effervescence results from an alcoholic fermentation conducted in a closed container. The production of a sparkling wine is always divided into two phases: the first phase begins with the production of a still wine and the second is “sparkling”. There are several methods that can be used in the sparkling process: classic or champagne method, closed vat method, and transfer method. In either method, a second fermentation is carried out (in a bottle or vat) preceded by the introduction of the fermentation liquor which is a syrup whose concentration of sugar will allow an internal pressure to develop CO2 production. Sparkling wines are very versatile. In Portugal we produce high quality sparkling wines that can be paired with several dishes, from seafood, fish and meat, or served simply as an aperitif.

    • FortifiedA fortified wine is a wine that has had a quantity of distilled spirit added to it to increase its alcohol content and stop its natural fermentation preventing the total transformation of the wort sugar into alcohol. In general, fortification of wines originally developed as a way of preserving wine on long overseas journeys. As a consequence, several types of fortified wine have been developed throughout history and their popularity has kept them in production to this day. Among them Port Wine, Madeira Wine, Carcavelos, Moscatel de Setúbal, Sherry, Marsala, Commandaria, Mistelle, Vins Doux Naturels (VDN), and Vermouth.
      • CarcavelosThis honey-coloured fortified wine is one of the four magnificent Portuguese fortified wines. Originating from the smallest wine region in Portugal – Carcavelos – its great promoter was the Marquis de Pombal. It is a secular, delicate, topaz-coloured and velvety liqueur wine. It has an almond aroma, acquiring a marked and characteristic perfume with ageing.
      • Liqueur
      • Madeira WineMadeira wine is a fortified wine produced in the demarcated region of Madeira with Madeira designation of origin. Madeira Wine can be appreciated at any time. According to each type, Dry Madeiras are great with aperitifs, as well as the Medium Dry ones, which are also a wonderful complement of soups. Cheeses are perfect to pair with Medium Sweet Madeiras, while Sweet Madeiras are ideal for sweets, chocolates and even more interesting with an excellent coffee.
      • MoscatelOf eternal voluptuousness, magneticity and pleasure, the Moscatéis from Setúbal are wonderful in the harmony always between alcohol, alcohol and freshness. Made with Moscatel de Setúbal or Moscatel Roxo varieties, they have the golden color, with strong citrus character, sweet and compoteado. They are considered “the Portuguese national heritage that drinks”, being appreciated by kings and by the people since time immemorial.
      • Port WinePort Wine stands out from ordinary wines due to its unique characteristics: an enormous variety of types that surprise us with the wealth and intensity of their incomparable aromas, a highly persistent aroma and flavour, a high alcohol content (usually between 19 and 22% vol.), a vast range of degrees of sweetness and a assortment of colours. There is a set of categories that identify the different types of Port Wine.
        • Late Bottled Vintage (LBV)This is a Ruby Port from a single year, chosen for its extremely high quality and bottled after ageing for four to six years in wood. Most of these Ports are ready for drinking when they are purchased, but some will continue to age in bottle. LBV Port is a deep ruby red, extremely full-bodied and rich in the mouth and it possesses the particular style and personality of a wine from a single harvest.
        • RubyAre wines in which the winemaker looks to restrain the evolution of their deep red colour and maintain the fruit and strength of a young wine.
        • Ruby ReserveFull-bodied, rich and dark ruby red in color, these wines are often the result of a selection of the best Port wines of each year, combined to create a young, powerful, fruity and intense yet round and versatile wine.
        • TawnyAre obtained from lots of different wines that have aged for different lengths of time in casks or in vats. With age, the colour of the wines slowly develops into tawny, medium tawny or light tawny, with a bouquet of dried fruits and wood; the older the wine, the stronger these aromas.
        • VintageConsidered by many as the jewel in the Port Wine crown, this is the only Port that ages in bottle. Produced from the grapes harvested during a single year and bottled two to three years after the vintage, it develops gradually for 10 to 50 years before it is drunk. The charm of Vintage resides in the fact that it is attractive at pratically all stages of its life in bottle. During the first five years, it retains the intense ruby of its original colour, exuberant aromas of red fruits and wild berries and a taste of black chocolate, all of which is balanced by strong tannins that make it the perfect accompaniement to desserts that are rich in chocolate. After ten years in bottle, in addition to its throwing a light deposit, Vintage takes on garnet tones and attains a delicious plenitude of ripe fruit aromas and flavours. As the wine matures, its colour turns a rich golden brown and its fruit acquires a greater subtlety and complexity and the deposit that it throws becomes thicker.
        • WhiteVaries in style according to whether it has aged for a shorter or longer period of time, and different degrees of sweetness according to the manner by which it is made. In addition to the traditional White Ports, there now are other wines with a floral and complex aroma and a minimum alcohol content of 16.5% (Light Dry White Port) capable of meeting the demand for less alcoholic Ports.
    • DistilledDistilled beverages are drinks that have a high alcohol content, purified through the distillation process from a fermented substance, such as fruits, cereals or vegetables. Some examples of these distillates are brandy, cachaça, gin, vodka, tequila, rum, whiskey and liquors.

Arribas Wine Company

Arribas Wine Company was founded in 2017, in Bemposta, Mogadouro. They aim to produce authentic wines based on regional varieties, old vineyards, traditional techniques, and a degree of innovation. Thus, strive to farm their vineyards as sustainably and respectfully as possible and make their wines in a minimalistic way.

The varietal mix found in the old vineyards has grown to reflect these hot growing seasons, with varieties that resist the heat and drought quite well and that can reach maturity early in the season.

Origins
Arribas Wine Company began to take shape in May 2017 on a visit to Bemposta, a village in the municipality of Mogadouro.

The richness of the region wine heritage, due to its old vineyards and the edaphoclimatic conditions, led them to decide to move forward with a wine production project.

They started this project in a small garage that functioned, for many years, as a private cellar.

The winery is in the old part of the village of Bemposta, and because it is on mother rock, it allows them to keep a cold and constant temperature. They opted for traditional production methods, and the winery equipment is limited to a vertical basket press and oak barrels.

They aim to produce authentic, light, easy-to-drink wines. For that reason, they try to make them as pure as possible.

Great Wines Start in the Vineyards
The quest for diversity and a spot with unique characteristics took us to Bemposta, a small village from Mogadouro, where the grandparents of one of the founders were born. There we found old vineyards, some recently abandoned, due to the elderly age of the owners with great potential over a breathtaking landscape.

Their first brand – Saroto – came up after seeing all this potential not being fully explored. If the word Saroto, is the local term to designate an animal with its tail cut off, the image of a lizard pretends to symbolize the capacity of regeneration, thus representing the will to recover and preserve such a rich and diverse heritage that otherwise would be lost.

X-Factor
The grape varieties as Tinta Gorda, Malvasia, Bastardo, Verdelho, Rufete, Bastardo Branco, Verdelho Vermelho, Tinta Serrana (among other grape varieties yet to be identified), the altitude, different soils and exposures, traditional and sustainable viticulture, and minimal intervention winemaking are the conducting wires of this project, which aims to reveal the full potential of “Arribas do the Douro” and its vineyards.

The Winemakers

Frederico Machado
“There are no limits on what this region can provide as it offers such a vast amount of possibilities in terms of winemaking. We favour a minimalist style to extract the best of what our vineyards have to offer.”

Ricardo Alves
“The wine is 90% made in the vineyard, and the rest is all about not messing up what nature has given us. We know our wines since the bud breaks up in the vine to the moment they are bottled.”

The Approach

Environment
“9 months of Winter and 3 months of hell” – This popular sentence expresses how hostile the conditions in the region are. Winters are extreme cold and dry and seems eternal. Summers are extreme hot during the daytime and cold at night.

Equipment
In line with their minimal philosophy, they have open fermentation vats, a vertical press, one pump and oak barrels.

Soil
In geological terms, their bedrock and soil is igneous granite or granodiorite with some metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss. Typically, the soils are poor and hard to work since due are on cliffs facing the Douro River.

Picking
Grapes are handpicked and carried into the cellar in 20 kg cases to avoid damaging the fruit.

The Vineyards

Old Vineyards
At Arribas Wine Company, they work exclusively with old vineyards, with the average age of the parcels ranging from 70 to 100 years old. One essential aspect of these vineyards is the mix between red and white varieties in the field, sometimes reaching fractions as large as 70-30 (reds/whites). The main varieties are Tinta Gorda, Bastardo, Serrana, Verdelho Vermelho for the reds and Verdelho, Malvasia, Posto Branco and Bastardo Branco for the whites.

Arribas do Douro
Bemposta is in the northeastern, characterized by a Mediterranean temperate climate of continental influence. Hence, it has cold and wet winters and short and dry summers. Even though Bemposta in the Trás-os-Montes sub-region Planalto Mirandês, they feel more connected to the Spanish Arribes DO as they have observed similarities in terms of soil, climate and even vineyards. Is why they believe that their region should be called “Arribas do Douro”.
