Herdade Barranco do Vale
Herdade Barranco do Vale is located in southern Portugal, in the western Algarve, nestled between the Atlantic coast and the Monchique and Caldeirão mountains.
The estate spans approximately 100 hectares of unspoiled natural beauty, where vineyards sit alongside cork, carob, olive and pine trees, creating a diverse and vibrant landscape.
The Family
Now managed by the third generation, the family aims to blend traditional authenticity with modern winemaking techniques, producing wines of exceptional quality that honour the Algarve’s heritage while embracing contemporary excellence.
The Production
Wine production at the estate began in 2016 with four Reserve-classified wines. The vineyards include Negra Mole — the Algarve’s native grape, over 60 years old — as well as Aragonez and Castelão, both around 20 years old. Since 2018, the new generation has also introduced white grape varieties, with their first bottles reaching the market in May 2019.
Soils: Sandy clay and schist
Climate: Mediterranean, with mild, short winters and long, hot, dry summers
Grape Varieties: Negra Mole (60+ years old), Castelão (20+ years old), Aragonez, Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier
The Wines
Reds are produced either from single varieties — Aragonez or Castelão — or blends of the two, sourced from vineyards over 20 years old.
Whites are made from single grapes, including Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay, or from a blend of indigenous Portuguese varieties: Antão Vaz, Arinto and Alvarinho.
Rosé is crafted exclusively from Negra Mole. This grape, the second oldest in Portugal, displays remarkable genetic diversity with both white and coloured clones. Considered the quintessential Algarve grape, Negra Mole is an indigenous variety found only in the region.
